Save the stray cats of Kuwait (South Surra)

This was the subject of an email I sent to both [ PAWS KUWAIT ] and [ Animal Friends League ] after a very sad incident; Evil sister one came up the house and she was hysterically crying, one of the kittens downstairs, a stray cat was run over by a car, either my father or my brother did that but we kept it aside because it would’ve caused more drama :/

You see, the whole family are cat lovers – we have 5 here and there are 10 – TEN – cats downstairs that we feed daily and believe me, this is not funny. They are breeding like crazy :$

The house owner complained about it, the stupid neighbors also feed them by throwing food in front of the house!!  The cats make the place dirty and of course, we clean after them as well, as if we don’t have enough animals in the house :x Out of despair, I put on my shaila and the house robe and went downstairs trying to put all of them in the car and throw them away next to the butcher shop at the coop in South Surra, at least they’d get meat there 3amaaaaa, we were 3 and we couldn’t catch anyone of them bastards!!!

I went upstairs, logged on the Mark’s blog for the previously mentioned websites and sent an email to both of them trying to find a solution:

1. Either we could pick the cats up and put them in a shelter

2. Take the cats to the vet and have them put to sleep!!!!

3. Poison the food :@

It is this serious am telling you! and it’s not only in our area, go to the Scientific Center area and maaaaaaan, it’s too much!! They are so used to humans they don’t get scared anymore. eh!

Of course, PAWS never replied back, I don’t know if they’re THAT busy or they don’t take this seriously! A lovely lady from Animal Friends League replied back with this

This is an ongoing problem in Kuwait in general and relocating them is not the answer because when you move one population into that of another, you have territory disputes and they end up hurting each other. There are far too many cats for us to help. I live in South Surra and the problem is far worse in older areas such as Shuwaikh. This problem has to be dealt with on a much larger scale and we are trying to work with the government but a solution is not in sight at this time. Although you are feeding them because you care for them, it is not always the best thing to do. Our trash bins are full of food and by feeding them and not sterilizing them so they are unable to breed, you are in fact making the problem worse. Let me explain. Basically by offering them food regularly, you are making them healthier and stronger which means they can breed more often and more of their kittens survive making the population get larger. You also teach them to rely on you and those younger ones that never had to learn to look for food are now completely relying on you and if you at some point needed to move, those cats would suffer very badly. If you want to manage this colony of cats, you need to first sterilize (desex so they cannot have babies) them then only feed them twice per week so that they can continue to hunt for their own food and rely on themselves. I know this is not the answer you were looking for but we have a lot of experience with this problem and it really is the best thing you can do for the cats. If you have any further questions please call me ########

Thanks Ayeshah! I don’t know what we could do as citizens and people living in here in Kuwait to solve this problem, they’re populating like rats and believe me, those cats are full of diseases.. We need a [ Pied Piper ] sometime soon!

Both of my children brought home a stray cat before leaving home, so my two cats eventually became the four I now have. Kaliyah Cats

  2. KTDP Says:

I guess it’s as good a cause as any ….. but then what will the bengalis eat ????

meh …. We’ll prolly have a couple of missing babies here and there I suppose but it’s a worthy sacrifice if it means that the lower classes get to survive while our feline friends get to enjoy long, full and healthy lives …..

  3. Chikapappi Says:

lol !! I think Koreans eat our feline friends, if we were in Egypt, we wouldn’t notice this problem ! lol

  4. Vixen Says:

  5. Ansam Says:

I dont like cat… I cant be in a place that is loaded with cats :-S Bana you are so sweet… but I agree, dont feed them, because they will always be around your house

  6. Chikapappi Says:

Can we buy them a flat as well? LOL!
How can anyone ever desex stray cats!? :S
we were three and we barely managed to catch one without looking like complete idiots! ROLF!
anyways.. i’m not sure people care enough about stray animals.. they’d rather see them dead or kill them quickly than do something proper. remember that kitten in Egypt? the easiest solution to all the vets i’ve been to was letting it die..!!! :S they didn’t even bother to kill it!! I’m not with putting them down.. at all.. civilized people do the following..
a- they start funding animal shelters.. (don’t start about human rights because we all know that human rights in “certain” countries are not applicable to “some” people! :S)
b- please.. what kind of animal shelter charges people for taking in stray animals!? :S this is weird.. you charge people to take in stray animals to put them to sleep! lol.. why don’t we just run them over and save the money!! :@
    c- stttttttttttooooooooooppppppppppp ffeeeeeeddddiinnnnnnggggggg tttthhhheeee cccaaattttsssss!!!!!
d- i have nothing more to say but i just needed to add a “d-” :P

kitties with their brain coming out of their head don’t look so cute.. :((((

  10. Grey Says:

Oh The problem is those bastard kids who think kitten is somthing to be stoned to death … real bastards.

  13. R. Says:

    *comes out of his cave..*

They’re right, we can only have them ‘fixed’ in order to control the cat population. I’ve been told that before by PAWS and yeah..PAWS are sorta busy nowadays.

  14. Chikapappi Says:

R., why are they busy?! o_O

  15. R. Says:

    Another thing, regarding point ‘a’:

Let’s *think* of having human rights in order to escalate to animal rights. I see kids getting ran over by cars on a daily basis & nothing is done about them.

  16. Chikapappi Says:

Here you go! serious talking to do some change. Who will be doing that :/ *sigh* everybody’s too busy when it comes to a cuase

  17. Purgatory Says:

    Serious Meow.

  18. Chikapappi Says:

*hands over a bowl of kitty biscuit to Purg* ;p

  19. Eugene Says:

Now everyone is talking about the American economy and eclections, nice to read something different. Eugene

  20. The Queen Says:

well R.. we “think”.. we B**** around.. we “get run over” everyday.. but who gives a sh*t! no one…
so let’s stick to animal rights cuz atleast animals treat humans better than they treat each other! hell i wish i was a cat.. atleast i won’t get the type a sh*t i get from people everyday.
and PAWS can kiss my ACT! how can they call themselves animal shelters when they are “too busy”!! what r they busy doing!? they’re supposed to shelter stray animals! they either do it or not! and i also heard about the animal shelter that charges people!? who-tf gave them the bright idea to charge people for taking in stray animals!? what good is a good dead if it’s for money!? :S it’s just a job.. not that what they’re doing (their JOB) is bad.. but it doesn’t make sense.. animal shelters r free! it is called a SHELTER! not a 2 star hotel! :P how do they keep the place running if that’s the excuse..? a little word called DONATION. that would be the lamest animal shelter i’ve ever heard of.. :S
and btw.. i’m not dissing PAWS.. i’m dissing whatever animal shelter that charges money.. :P

KJ, this happened to me without knowing; We had those people who come clean n’ check your car in front of the house, I had a beamer then and to our surprise there was a dead cat in the engine :$ AAAAAAAAH

  24. This Week in the Blogosphere « Anything Goes Says:

[...] Chikapappi wants to stop the stray cat tragedies [...]

  25. eshda3wa Says:

people need to stop throwing so much food out
or make the garbage less accessible.

when u reduce the food cats wont breed as much..

it really is a major problem

before having a few cats around was a good thing cause they catch mice and such

now there too lazy to walk from one garbage to the next!

  26. nazirezorali Says:

I think everyone should take these cats and give them homes people in the neighborhood should take 2 in then they will not be homeless cats anymore. shelters keep them in cages forever..

  27. Michael Says:

I volunteer at PAWS. The fact is the animal shelters are there for sick or rescued animals, not strays or unwanted pets. Too many people hand over unwanted pets and now we’re having to put animals down because we have no room. Kuwait needs to hire specialist teams to tranquilize cats and then ‘fix’ them so that they don’t breed. There also needs to be some sort of law against maltreatment of animals.

  28. John Peaveler Says:

Just a quick comment. Animal Friends charges a very reasonable 30kd fee for people who are abandoning their pets. On average, we invest around 100kd per animal. We ask people who rescue animals to give a donation and suggest 30kd, but we have never refused an animal because of failure to pay.

On a different note, stay animal management is a hot topic in every developing nation. The only effective method of population control is a trap, sterilize, release program. Cats should only be caught using humane live traps, and dogs can be caught using nets, traps, and chemical capture.

An for the record, Animal Friends does not keep animals in cages, nor do we euthanize animals for longevity. We have an aggressive cat adoption program, and we have an international transport program. Both of these prevent us from having to euthanize perfectly adoptable animals.

Any further questions can be addressed to info@animalfriendskuwait.org

  29. Oceayana Says:

i want to open an animal shelter but i dont know how, if anyone can let me know how and what do i need to do please email me at Oceayana_silvermist@hotmail.com. my first aim is clearing as much cats from each area giving them their medical care and find them a good home either in kuwait or outside kuwait before going for cats in other areas, and does it has to be in wafra, its too far away from where i live..

is the cat nice; like are they friendly?

  32. Jewaira Says:

Death by poison is slow and tortuous and anyone with an iota of a heart would never consider using poison to get rid of stray cats.

Perhaps as households we can try simple things like reducing the food waste so that stray cats don’t have anything to rummage into.

Second, do people actually pay attention to the rubbish bins in front of their houses? Keep the lid on at all times. I have yet to come across a cat that can lift the bin top.

Third, there are numerous natural methods to deter cats from the garden and the hosh around the house. These should be investigated.

  33. Brianna Says:

Hey! Don’t kill them!! They have lives too, feed them, try to find them a home, they deserve to live too! If a human was poisouned by food you’d care, but if a cat was you wouldn’t? Whats your problem?! Stray cats can’t help they were born strays!
